Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Have to bring my own Laptop?

Absolutely yes. Bring your laptop every time. We do not require a specific OS; actually, you can even have a Chromebook, since all of our coding lessons, practice and program is cloud-based.

Is 4Geeks a licensed/accredited academic institution?

For sure! We are licensed (not accredited) in Florida by the Commission for Independent Education of the Florida Department of Education.

How is a typical day of classes?

The course has classes 3 times per week, 3 hours per day. Normally you may want to grab a coffee (Starthub coffee is a must) and start chatting with your mentors and peer programmers.

Flipped Classroom means that you have to come to classes having read the material, watched the videos and practiced a couple of exercises. Your time is gold and we have to take advantage of every available moment you have.

After those classic 15min of getting settled, we start reviewing the content for the class. Your mentors will clarify any doubts you may have and will explain with a couple of cases how does it work and how you are going to be able to code that particular lesson.

Then we start coding. Normally there are one or two exercises or mini-projects during a class. Awareness becomes knowledge after you have practiced and reviewed a topic several times.

By the end of the class, your mentors will guide you through the next assignments. What you have to learn, watch and practice for the next class. Also, there is always time to solved last time issues with your code, so your mentor will always try to help you reach your particular goal.

How many hours a week do I need to have available?

This is a part-time program, the in-house classes will require 9 hours every week, but in order to make you the best possible developer, we would need an additional 10 hours commitment from your side, resulting in (approx) 20 hours every week. Sorry, there is no other way. You will stay behind if you don’t get the exercises done. Plus, this is the way we make sure you get the skills needed as a developer.

We have built an online LMS (Learning Machine System), with exercises included, videos, tutorials, cheat sheets, customized profile, gamified learning and evaluations, text, readings, recommended books, lessons, infographics, and so more.

Do you remember us talking about a new framework for Coding Education? Ok, we are serious about building it. From day one you will have to go deep and learn in a new challenging way; but we are here for you, really here for you, online and offline access to Mentors and Communications platforms. We are committed to training you as a Developer, and we will do it together.

Why JavaScript?

The question should be asked the other way around, why not Javascript? There are no other alternatives, JavaScript owns the web, is the only language web browsers understand and it is growing crazy.

Javascript is the most used coding language in the world, every website needs it and the most demanded by companies by at least 10x more. It’s just the way it has to be.

Why Python?

Python is the fastest growing language in wealthy countries, it is widely used in all the industries and it has top quality libraries for all the fields of the future: Web, AI, Robotics, Big Data, etc. It is the best language to teach programming according to MIT Teachers. Go ahead and take a look by yourself here.

It has to be Python. You will find more job opportunities, you will learn to code and it will help you with other Backend languages and frameworks, and even Google endorsed python and is using it everywhere!

Why Not Node jS?

Node is amazing, it challenges the way the web is made but only 0.3% of the web has adopted it, and its growth has slowed down during the past months. Python, Java, PHP and other similar languages are still ruling the world (and that is not going to change soon). They work in a very different way than Node, our purpose is to prepare you for the real world, we train Full-Stack Developers using/teaching the most standard and professional technologies.

Here you can find more argument on why we are not teaching NodeJS yet.

Why 4Geeks Academy?

Well, it’s always weird to speak greatly about us. But ok, since you are asking, we will help you get the answer” 4Geeks Academy is great! Why? Easy:

Premium Coding Education +  Part-time + From only $240 per month.

We also have a methodology where we enhance your capabilities; we train you and we will make a software developer out of you. We are providing a new approach to teaching coding that not many other educational organizations are doing.

We Breathe Coding Coding. That is our motto because we understand that in order to become a developer one has to become part of the coding culture.

One of the greatest things about 4Geeks Academy is the gamification behind our curriculum. We’ve made learning fun, and have mastered the art of showing how coding skills can fit into everyday life.

There are some people saying the same. You can watch them here.

Why part-time? How does it works ?

We believe that the future of education is “part-time”.

What we provide is a blended education leveraging two proven formats: part-time training and flipped classroom. The methodology combines a mixture of four cornerstones:

  1. Flipped Classroom: theory is delivered through video, animation, images, and infographics. Class-time is then used to debate, build projects and mentor over practical exercises.
  2. 1-1 Weekly Mentorship: every student has the opportunity to have regular conversations with a mentor.
  3. 1:7 Student Ratio: An intimate setting provides the faculty with the opportunity to adapt to each student’s particular pace.
  4. Talent Tree: The syllabus maps out 44 skills, where students earn points towards each skill in a gamified fashion.

How do I pay for my tuition?

You have several options. Our tuition fee for the Full Stack Development program is $6,000. No other fees, hidden charges or anything else. Just $6k for a coding program 16 weeks long in Miami.

Furthermore, we have also worked -together with great partners- on offering you an Extended Payment Plan. Therefore, you can apply for a 6, 12 or 24-month plan, in order to lower the upfront cost and get the education you need. There is no other offer like this in Miami.

Here you can also find the 4Geeks Academy Payment Act: a detailed description of your payment options.

What is the difference between the Full Stack Development program and the Website Program at Miami Dade College?

We love this question. Basically, because we are in charge of both of them :).

With the Website program at Miami Dade College, you will learn how to code and how to build Websites. The syllabus for this program includes: HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, WordPress, API’s, among others.

Now, the Full Stack Development program is designed in four seasons:

Pre-Work + Learn to Code + Build Websites + Build Web Application.

But it also has some additional features:

  • It’s 16 weeks long and it is 320+ hours of learning;
  • The stack of technologies here are: JavaScript, React, MongoDB, Python, Django, API’s, AJAX, SASS, together with the classics: HTML, CSS and more.
  • There are plenty of payment opportunities with our Extended Payment Plan;
  • We will guide you and help you to get a job after the program through our Placement Program;
  • You will have access for one year to our Academic and exercises platform (4Geeks Academy LMS: Breathe Code Platform);
  • You will be able to create websites but also you will have the skills and set of tools to be part of more challenging projects: Data analysis, Machine Learning, Augmented reality: nobody else in the city is training coders with these skills.

Do I get a job after completing the program?

This is the part where everybody pays attention. We cannot guarantee that you will get a job afterwards, nobody can actually; but by enrolling this program you will have access to our Advisors and Partners. You will be part of a new network and we will help you and guide you throughout the process.

Extended Payment Plan? How does it works? What does that mean?

The Extended payment plan has been designed for our students. The average tuition fee for a coding program in the US is about $11k. Yes, $5k higher than us. Yes, 83% more expensive than us.

But wait, we not only offer the best price in town: $6k for the whole program, but we also offer the best payment plan in Miami. You can apply for 6 months, 12 months or 24 months extended payment plan. You can pay only $240 per month (plus the deposit = $1,000) for 24 months and that’s it, you will become a developer in 16 weeks.

If you want to get to know more about this plan, click here. Now, if you want to start your application, click here.

Do I graduate as a senior developer?

Nop. Please don’t run before walking. Coding is just like life. And if you are good at it, would be faster, but never immediate. Details matter, like a relationship :). You get the experience to see all the details, once you have mastered the art.

Taking our Full Stack program means that your life will have a new skill, but also you will have a new way of thinking. You will graduate as Junior Developer, but a really good developer, not just one of the sack!

How is your schedule?

It’s actually really easy:

  • Mondays – Wednesdays – Fridays;
  • From 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm;
  • Mandatory assistance: 80% or more;
  • 16 weeks

If you got our Syllabus Doc, you may probably remember this:

Do I need any coding experience to enroll the program?

No. You just need to want to learn. Coding must be in some part of your body and we will find it. If you know how to open a browser and how to open a Facebook account, we’ll be fine!

How is the market of companies looking for developers?

There are over FIVE hundred thousand (500,000) open coding jobs in the US. Only Florida we have more than 25,000 open positions and Universities are graduating 2k per year. The gap is huge and the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts it will grow 24% more in 2020.

Why Miami?

Miami. No longer a city known just for tourism, parties, and an extravagant lifestyle; Miami is becoming a place where technology and the startup ecosystem is growing faster than those of any other city in the US.

According to a Careerbliss study published in Forbes, Miami is the happiest city to live, and according to CNN, software development is the best profession in America. Can you imagine having both?
